We are looking for a candidate keen to start or continue their career in NHS finance. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and enthusiastic CCAB/CIMA qualified accountant, with extensive experience in effective financial management, strong management and communication skills, as well as excellent analytical, technical and IT skills from the Public or Private sector. You will have the ability to operate at a strategic level, work under pressure, and manage multiple conflicting deadlines.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Accountable to Clinical Support & Specialist Surgery division; manage a small team and report to the Divisional Finance Manager.

  • Provide high-quality, accurate, and timely professional financial management advice, monitoring, and reporting to various divisions.

  • Serve as lead Finance contact for several Divisions, acting as key point of contact for budget holders and managers.

  • Support and input to projects, business cases, and service developments.

  • Hybrid working approach allowing flexibility between home and office.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Support senior finance leadership (ADoF, HoFM, DFM/RFPM) in monitoring and reporting services.

  2. Act as lead accountant for clinical and non-clinical divisions.

  3. Support finance and trust-wide projects.

  4. Produce annual budgets and accurate monthly financial forecasts.

  5. Ensure monthly financial ledger updates and resolve anomalies.

  6. Review accruals and manage invoice processes.

  7. Investigate variances and analyse expenditure/income trends.

  8. Produce detailed monthly budget statements with commentary.

  9. Assist with annual plans, NHSI returns, and workforce info.

  10. Deputise for senior finance managers and attend divisional meetings.

  11. Provide professional financial advice and training to budget holders.

  12. Maintain strong relationships with divisional managers.

  13. Organise budget meetings and advise on service costing, forecasting, and savings.

  14. Provide financial input for business cases and service developments.

  15. Monitor cost savings and contribute to year-end accounts preparation.

  16. Develop knowledge of income, commissioning, trading accounts, and service line reporting.

  17. Promote best accounting practices and contribute to corporate financial projects.

  18. Use report writing software for detailed financial analysis.

  19. Cover other team members as needed.

  20. Manage, develop, and appraise Assistant Divisional Finance Manager and Financial Management Assistant.

  21. Plan personal development aligned with Trust objectives.

  22. Demonstrate Trust values and professional behaviour.

  23. Prioritise work, manage conflicting demands, and propose solutions.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Essential: CCAB/CIMA qualified accountant, continuing professional development, secondary education (5 GCSEs including Maths & English).

  • Desirable: Degree, willingness to develop further.

Experience

  • Essential: Significant experience in management accounting, strong financial management knowledge, staff management, and computerized financial systems.

  • Desirable: Experience with multiple stakeholders, statutory accounts preparation, and multi-agency environments.

Skills

  • Excellent analytical and reasoning skills

  • Ability to present financial information to non-financial audiences

  • Planning, monitoring, and influencing skills

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Proficient with financial systems, spreadsheets, and databases

  • Ability to manage and motivate staff

  • Ability to prioritise and work independently

  • Leadership and change management abilities

Knowledge

  • Essential: Advanced financial management and accounting principles

  • Desirable: Understanding NHS Cancer Plan and Trust performance targets
