You will join the Chief Medical Advisor Directorate, which provides trusted clinical and public health leadership through expert advice, guidance, epidemiological insights, and evidence. The directorate leads services protecting populations locally, nationally, and globally.
This role sits within the UKHSA core User-Centred Design (UCD) team, part of the Readiness and Surge division. This division works across UKHSA to set strategic directions and focuses on agency capability, putting stakeholder and customer needs at the center of design to improve public health outcomes through better user experiences and end-to-end design.

Job Summary
Content designers make complex information easier to understand and use. They write clear, usable content for transactional and informational services, and ensure quality in others’ work. They use data and user research to guide content decisions.
As a Junior Content Designer, you will:
Work within a multidisciplinary squad collaborating across UKHSA
Support content design work rooted in a deep understanding of users and their needs
Help ensure quality, innovation, and creativity in all aspects of design
Embody inclusive behaviours and promote inclusive design practices
Actively participate in the UCD community, sharing insights and best practices
This role aligns with the Government Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework for Content Designers.
Key Responsibilities
Create and iterate content for projects with support
Apply content design best practices and principles
Demonstrate understanding of user needs and embed them in projects
Support development of content strategies based on research and data
Use collaborative design tools to explore problems and create content assets for testing and iteration
Build and maintain stakeholder relationships, demonstrating the value of user-centred content design
Collaborate with user researchers and designers to analyse insights and identify user needs
Review others’ work to ensure it is user-focused, accurate, and meets government/NHS standards and accessibility requirements
Make actionable recommendations based on insights, communicating them clearly
Contribute actively to the UKHSA UCD community, advocating for content design and professional development
Essential Criteria
To be considered, you should have:
Some experience using user-centred content design methods, best practices, and tools
Experience writing and editing accessible, usable content using style guides and design standards
Ability to support content strategy development based on research and data
Experience managing stakeholder relationships and influencing support for user-centred standards
Experience working in multidisciplinary teams to discover user needs and create quality user experiences
Awareness of the importance of inclusive, equitable, accessible, and sustainable public services
Understanding of prototyping and when to use it
Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams to ensure timely delivery
Desirable Criteria
Experience with:
Publishing using a Content Management System (CMS)
Working in an agile environment

Stage 1: Application & Sift

Assessment will include questions on content concepts, prototyping, stakeholder management, user focus, and user-centred content design
5-10 minute presentation or practical assessment to demonstrate your understanding of user-centred design

Location & Working Pattern
Hybrid working at one of UKHSA’s core HQ offices: Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, or London (Canary Wharf)
Expect to spend at least 60% of your time working onsite (approx. 3 days per week)
Offices are modern with excellent transport links and co-located with other government departments
