The Senior Management Accountant works as part of a team supporting one or more Executive Directors, alongside a Management Accountant, to provide financial information and advice to a defined group of budget holders.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Produce monthly budget reports for services within one or more directorates

  • Understand and communicate key drivers of the financial position to budget holders

  • Meet regularly with budget holders to review performance and investigate variances

  • Identify concerns and escalate to budget holders, senior finance team, and service directors

  • Attend Directorate Senior Management Team meetings and present financial information clearly

  • Undertake costings for new developments and service enhancements

  • Provide support on revenue implications of business cases and service changes

  • Assist in developing annual budgets to ensure services operate within resources

  • Help identify and monitor Cost Improvement Programmes (CIP)

  • Support the Senior Finance Manager in monitoring contract income

What is Staff Bank?
The EPUT NHS Staff Bank hires clinical and non-clinical professionals to take on shifts within trust hospitals and community settings. All permanent staff are automatically enrolled, though working extra shifts is optional.

Job Description – Responsibilities

  • Ensure monthly reporting timetables are met with accurate data, including accruals and pre-payments

  • Reconcile budget movements, monitor savings plans, and investigate variances

  • Prepare robust forecast income and expenditure estimates

  • Challenge and support budget holders to maintain financial control

  • Provide corrective action advice for variances, including cost reduction and income generation opportunities

  • Present financial performance in Directorate meetings and handle queries

  • Support managers in costing staffing, non-pay expenditure, income flows, and cost pressures

  • Raise monthly block invoices and reconcile income

  • Ensure directorate income is invoiced correctly with supporting information

  • Provide training on financial and purchasing systems

  • Ensure compliance with Trust financial policies

  • Contribute to the production of Trust Annual Accounts

  • Manage, develop, and train the Management team

Person Specification

Educational Qualifications – Essential:

  • Membership of AAT, relevant degree, or equivalent qualification/experience

  • Studying for CCAB or willing to start training

  • Commitment to ongoing professional development

  • GCSE level or equivalent

Desirable:

  • Willingness to learn new skills

Knowledge – Essential:

  • Proficient in IT software (spreadsheets, word processing)

  • Knowledge of NHS finance regime

  • Awareness of NHS issues and challenges

Skills/Experience – Essential:

  • IT literate

  • Good oral communication in English

  • NHS finance department experience with computerised systems

  • Ability to present complex financial information clearly to non-financial managers

  • High accuracy and attention to detail
