Job Purpose
The Head of Care position requires a hands-on approach, working primarily with the care assistant teams, while maintaining close contact with the kitchen and domestic teams regarding residents’ care. The role involves applying the highest standards of professional practice to ensure the home’s policies and procedures are followed, in line with relevant legislation, and to meet residents’ needs in a person-centred way. This position supports the home and deputy manager, and deputises when required.

Skills, Knowledge & Qualifications
Required:
Level 3 qualification
Good, long-term experience within a similar role
Ability to communicate effectively and confidentially at all levels
Team player
Willingness to participate in continuing professional development
Demonstrable evidence of leadership qualities and management skills
Planning and organising skills
Supportive of staff
Desired:
Experience working in a similar environment/with the elderly

Main Responsibilities
Management
Demonstrate both care and managerial leadership to team leaders, carers, and ancillary staff
Maintain a visible, accessible, and authoritative presence for residents, relatives, and staff
Support, supervise, and advise to ensure care delivery meets residents’ needs
Assist the home manager with staff training, supervisions, and appraisals
Ensure comprehensive induction for all new staff and ongoing support during induction
Pass on skills and knowledge through supervision and mentoring
Ensure high standards via continuous assessment and supervision
Assess social and health needs of prospective residents and monitor ongoing care
Undertake personal care as appropriate
Clinical
Apply knowledge of safeguarding, DOLS, and the Mental Capacity Act in practice
Ensure care performance meets required fundamental standards
Organise and oversee care plans to meet residents’ full range of needs
Regularly evaluate and review care plans, updating when necessary
Manage safe ordering, administration, and storage of drugs and treatments (if applicable)
Assess and monitor clinical care needs autonomously
Act as a role model in clinical care delivery
Audit care delivery, create action plans for improvement, and report to the home manager
Training & Development
Raise training needs with management
Maintain and improve professional knowledge and competence
Attend mandatory training sessions
Support and mentor new staff
Health & Safety
Understand and implement Health & Safety, Emergency, and Fire procedures
Ensure compliance with infection control responsibilities
Promote safe working practices
General
Support the Home Manager in leading the home and maintaining high standards
Adhere to the General Social Care Council Code of Conduct and CQC regulations
Investigate complaints when required
Maintain required logs and records
Be on-call for emergencies and cover shifts when necessary
Protect confidential information
Maintain correct working hour records
Ensure the home’s security
Follow all company policies and procedures
Ensure all equipment is clean and well maintained
Undertake any other reasonable tasks assigned
