Job Summary
The Cellular Pathology department at the Royal Victoria Infirmary is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Project Manager to join the Cellular Pathology Genomics Centre (CPGC) team. This post is fixed term for 12 months from appointment.
Cellular Pathology provides tissue diagnostic pathways across histology, diagnostic cytology, neuropathology, and autopsy, and is part of the North East and North Cumbria (NENC) Pathology Network. The department hosts the regional CPGC, supporting genomic testing pathways in collaboration with the NEY Genomic Laboratory Hub (NEYGLH).
The team consists of approximately 240 consultants, scientists, and laboratory support staff, delivering UKAS ISO15189 and HTA licensed services. The department also supports research and innovation through clinical trial, tissue bank, and commercial project laboratories.

Main Duties of the Role
Contribute to the development, expansion, and improvement of the CPGC within Cellular Pathology for the benefit of patients in NENC.
Process map current genomics pathways to identify and implement improvements.
Develop systems to provide mandatory datasets to NHSE.
Develop systems to supply operational data to NENC.
Collaborate with other Cellular Pathology labs in NENC and CPGCs within NEYGLH to share learning and strategies.
Provide regular progress and performance reports to the Cellular Pathology Laboratory Management Team and CPGC Consultant Pathology Lead.
Engage with CPGC laboratory and data analysts in Cellular Pathology and Newcastle GLH laboratory.
Meet defined project targets and deadlines set by the Cellular Pathology Laboratory Manager.
Job Responsibilities
Manage and deliver Cellular Pathology services and strategic projects within the programme portfolio to the required quality and standard.
Oversee the full project life cycle with a focus on change management and service modernisation.
Work closely with suppliers, clinicians, health professionals, and patient forums to realise IT-enabled service benefits.
Deputise for the Lead Project Manager when required.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
Degree level or equivalent qualification/experience in IT, Business, Health, or a relevant post.
Project management qualification (preferably PRINCE2 Practitioner) or equivalent experience.
Essential Experience
Managing a team, ideally in a project or service support capacity.
Delivering change management technology.
Analysing and forecasting staff requirements and managing budgets.
Inter-agency working with multiple and diverse partners.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Managing multiple complex projects and supporting executive-level project boards.
Desirable Experience
Managing projects in similar-sized organisations inside or outside the NHS.
Understanding of Trust policies and procedures.
Skills & Abilities
Ability to reconcile conflicting priorities and negotiate for optimal outcomes.
Ability to work under pressure, meet strict deadlines, and manage multiple tasks.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Additional Information
Working Pattern
Monday to Friday, 7am–6pm (flexible/agile working supported).
