Job Summary

This role offers an exciting opportunity to shape the future of medical education and training in Wales.

HEIW is seeking a Project Manager (Medical Education Reform) to lead projects across three key reform areas:

  • Transition from undergraduate to postgraduate training

  • Increasing flexibility in training

  • Supporting and enabling medical trainers

The postholder will:

  • Manage a portfolio of reform projects, from planning through to evaluation, aligned with HEIW’s strategic priorities.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders across NHS Wales, education providers, and national bodies.

  • Coordinate meetings, events, and online resources to support reform.

  • Analyse programme data, identify trends, and present recommendations for senior decision-making.

  • Lead on communication strategies, risk management, and improvements to policy and process.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Manage projects within the Medical Education Reform Programme.

  • Work with stakeholders to ensure effective delivery, including planning, reporting, and evaluation.

  • Provide specialist advice and guidance to a wide range of stakeholders.

  • Contribute to the achievement of HEIW’s strategic objectives.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable; English and/or Welsh speakers are welcome to apply.

This role is fixed term/secondment for 12 months due to funding. Applicants interested in a secondment must obtain permission from their current line manager before applying.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential:

  • Degree in relevant subject or equivalent experience

  • Project management qualification (e.g., Agile, Prince 2) or equivalent experience

  • Evidence of recent continuing professional development

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of medical education/training systems in Wales or the UK

  • Knowledge of postgraduate medical training or workforce transformation

Experience

Essential:

  • Project management experience

  • Experience producing high-quality reports and correspondence

  • Budget management experience

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in the NHS or public sector

Skills and Attributes

Essential:

  • Strong interpersonal and organisational skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft 365

  • Ability to interpret and present complex data

  • Ability to manage sensitive situations with tact

  • Ability to work independently and in a team

Desirable:

  • Welsh Speaker (Level 1) or willingness to learn

Other

Essential:

  • Ability to travel across Wales
