Job Summary

The Management Accountant will play a key role in supporting the financial management and strategic decision-making of the GP Practice. This role involves preparing accurate and timely financial reports, analysing performance, managing budgets, and ensuring the practice meets its financial and statutory obligations.

You will work closely with the Practice Managers, GP Partners, and Directors to provide financial insight that supports efficient, compliant, and sustainable operations.

  • Analyse variances and provide actionable insights to improve performance.

  • Support annual budgeting and forecasting processes.

  • Monitor NHS and non-NHS income streams and manage PCN funding.

  • Ensure compliance with NHS financial regulations and maintain robust internal controls.

  • Advise on cost efficiency and funding opportunities.

Job Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Prepare monthly and quarterly management accounts, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow forecasts.

  • Reconcile the monthly transactions for each cost centre, liaise with budget holders to clarify the expenditure and any queries on categorisation.

  • Analyse variances between actual and budgeted results, identifying trends and areas for improvement, report to Director of Finance and Corporate Services.

  • Ensure that invoicing, accruals and prepayment schedules are in order and calculations are accurate.

  • Prepare year-end accounts, including all reconciliations and resolving queries and liaise with external accountants for finalisation and audit preparation.

  • Assist with creating a new set of management accounts pack including setting the coding in the accounting software and designing the reports.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Support the annual budget-setting process in collaboration with the Practice Managers, Partners and Directors.

  • Prepare budget templates which are user-friendly, well-developed to accommodate any changes and efficient.

  • Develop financial forecasts and monitor performance against budgets.

  • Provide financial modelling and analysis to support decision-making and long-term planning.

Income & Expenditure Management

  • Monitor NHS and non-NHS income streams (e.g. GMS/PMS payments, enhanced services, QOF, private income).

  • Track and reconcile PCN payments and reimbursements, including setting automated templates to track the invoicing.

  • Manage staff allocations in payroll journals, provide staff cost reports to budget holders.

Financial Compliance & Controls

  • Ensure compliance with NHS financial regulations, tax obligations, and payroll legislation.

  • Maintain strong internal financial controls and procedures.

  • Assist with providing the documentation of the processes, review finance policies and procedures, ensuring that the accounting principles are applied consistently.

  • Assist with data analysis and compliance metrics for Practice Managers.

Operational Support

  • Advise on cost efficiency, service profitability, and funding opportunities.

  • Track and report on PCN funding including reimbursements, shared roles, and service income.

  • Provide financial data and insights for CQC inspections, business cases, and funding bids.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Part-qualified or qualified accountant (CIMA, ACCA, ACA, or equivalent).

  • Proven experience in management accounting or financial management.

  • Strong analytical and advanced Excel skills including complex formulas and Power Query.

  • Experience in budgeting and forecasting.

  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial colleagues.

  • Understanding of confidentiality and data protection.

Desirable

  • Experience in primary care, healthcare, or NHS finance.

  • Familiarity with accounting software (e.g. Xero, QuickBooks, Sage).

  • Knowledge of GP Practice funding streams and NHS contracts.
