Key Responsibilities

As a Health Care Assistant at St. Luke’s Hospice, you will:

  • Provide high-quality personal care and practical support to individuals with life-limiting conditions, respecting their wishes and preferences.

  • Assist with daily living activities: mobility, washing, dressing, toileting, eating, and drinking, in line with individual care plans.

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming hospice environment for patients, families, and visitors.

  • Offer companionship and emotional reassurance to patients and carers.

  • Work closely with nurses, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to provide integrated palliative care.

  • Document care accurately, upholding confidentiality and data protection protocols.

  • Assist with moving and handling, pressure area care, and symptom monitoring—escalating concerns when necessary.

  • Participate in team meetings, ongoing training, and service improvement initiatives.

Skills, Qualifications, and Experience

  • Previous experience as a care assistant or support worker in palliative, hospice, nursing home, hospital, or community settings is advantageous.

  • NVQ Level 2 or Care Certificate (or willingness to work towards it).

  • Kind, respectful, flexible, and patient-centred approach to care.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to work independently and in a team.

  • Reliable, with good initiative and understanding of professional boundaries.

  • Familiarity with safeguarding, confidentiality, and infection control practices.

  • Location: Thurrock Hospice, RM14 3EB — supporting inpatient and community care settings.

  • Contract Type: Permanent, Part-time

  • Working Hours:

    • Part-time shifts available
