Job Summary
The region’s only finance team dedicated to Clinical Research in the NHS is recruiting a Research Finance Manager following the retirement of the previous postholder.
This is a rare opportunity for a motivated and flexible professional to join a team supporting world-leading healthcare research.
Newcastle Hospitals manages around £60 million of clinical research funding annually across a wide range of clinical specialties, including pioneering work in AI and cell therapy. The Trust is among the top three commercial research study sites in the UK.

Main Duties of the Job
The postholder will support the Assistant Finance Director and Clinical Board Finance Manager in all aspects of research finance, including:
Acting as the key contact for senior finance and research delivery management.
Building strong relationships with senior research delivery managers.
Providing advice on finance aspects and identifying risks.
Optimising use of commercial, non-commercial, and grant income.
Overseeing month-end and year-end reporting for research delivery.
Preparing and submitting forecasts, budgets, and annual returns.
Ensuring accurate quarterly and annual reporting on infrastructure and research grants.
Identifying and implementing improvements to processes and reporting.
Supporting strategic work for the Clinical Board Finance Manager.
Deputising for the Clinical Board Finance Manager and Assistant Finance Director.
Leading and managing a team of finance staff.

Responsibilities
The Finance Manager (Research) will:
Lead in providing high-quality financial information to senior leaders for both monthly management and statutory reporting.
Ensure knowledge of accounting standards and research funding mechanisms is applied to optimise resources.
Manage the research delivery finance team (eight staff) with support from the Directorate Accountant for Research.
Provide financial management services for all research income and expenditure.
Deliver timely and accurate financial information to support decision-making.
Contribute to developing financial reporting systems to improve quality and efficiency.
Play a key role in the Trust’s financial planning.
Maintain financial controls within governance guidelines.
Deputise for the Assistant Finance Director as required.
The role is based at Regent Point, Gosforth, with parking available and easy access to the Regent Centre metro and bus interchange. Agile and flexible working options are available.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
Essential:
Professional accountancy qualification
Significant post-qualification experience in a complex finance department (master’s level equivalent)
Evidence of CPD
Desirable:
Previous NHS finance experience at a senior level
ECDL or equivalent
In-depth knowledge of NHS research funding streams and the role of NIHR
Knowledge & Experience
Essential:
Specialist knowledge of NHS and Foundation Trust finance regime
Understanding of NHS R&D funding systems, costing models, and governance
Staff management and supervisory experience
Knowledge of financial computer systems
Desirable:
Senior NHS finance experience
Skills & Abilities
Essential:
Ability to work autonomously, interpreting national policy for Trust benefit
Strong judgement in complex situations
Effective communication of complex or sensitive information to varied audiences
Strong relationship-building with clinicians, managers, and external organisations
Flexible approach in a changing environment
