Job Summary
The Haematology Directorate at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an enthusiastic, experienced, and motivated Operational Manager to join the leadership team.
The service is fast-paced and covers clinical areas including Haemato-Oncology, Haemostasis and Thrombosis, and Anticoagulation. It recently joined the Specialised Cancer Services Directorate to form a new Care Group (HaSC), led by Operations Director Richard Maxted.
This is a unique opportunity to help shape the Directorate’s ambitious vision during a period of significant change.
As Operational Manager, you will:
Provide leadership and management of all non-clinical services within the Directorate.
Ensure resources are deployed effectively to meet activity and finance targets.
Support the development and implementation of service improvements in line with Trust and Commissioner requirements.
The Directorate is engaged in large-scale improvement and modernisation projects aimed at enhancing patient experience and clinical delivery, making this an exciting time to take on the role.
Main Duties of the Role
Provide supportive leadership to the Admin & Clerical team, ensuring staff feel valued and understand their contribution.
Work collaboratively with the Senior Leadership Team to ensure resources are available and utilised effectively.
Ensure high standards of service, teaching, and research in a patient-centred environment.
Take responsibility for achieving financial, activity, and waiting time targets.
Work closely with Finance, HR, Information Services, and other departments.
Foster effective working relationships with clinical teams and ensure a multidisciplinary approach to service planning and delivery.

Inpatient services: 3 wards with 47 beds at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital (P3, P4, and O1).
29 side rooms, including 12 HEPA-filtered rooms for all levels of Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation and Leukemic induction therapy.
Dedicated day-case facility.
Apheresis Unit managed by NHSBT.
Centre for Haemophilia and Thrombosis.
Haematology provides innovative treatments to local and national patients, offering opportunities to support improvements across outpatient, inpatient, and day-case services.

Education & Qualifications
Essential:
Degree (or equivalent qualification) in a business or management subject, or equivalent experience.
Evidence of ongoing professional development.
Postgraduate qualification in business or management (or equivalent experience).
Experience
Essential:
Extensive managerial experience in an acute hospital-based clinical service.
Experience managing services to deliver 18-week and cancer activity targets.
Staff management experience (objectives, appraisal, recruitment, disciplinary).
Experience leading and delivering service improvements.
Budget management, monitoring, and control.
Building effective relationships with management and clinical teams.
Negotiation and influencing skills at all levels.
Ability to analyse and present complex data to facilitate improvement.
Desirable:
Capacity planning in a Clinical Directorate.
Cancer tracking processes.
Developing business cases/proposals for investment.
Contributing to strategic service plans.
