Two Content Designer roles are available within the Chief Medical Advisor Directorate, which provides trusted advice, guidance, and leadership in public health. The Directorate leads services that protect the population from hazards locally, nationally, and globally.

Main Duties
These roles sit within UKHSA’s User-Centred Design (UCD) team, part of the Readiness and Surge division. This division ensures UKHSA is strategically prepared to respond to health threats, with a focus on external stakeholder and customer needs.
Responsibilities include:
Embedding UCD approaches into UKHSA’s ways of working.
Providing UCD expertise in project delivery.
Advocating for all users and ensuring equitable outcomes.
Designing accessible products aligned with the Government Service Standard.
Leading the UCD community of practice across UKHSA.
Establishing and maintaining standards for UCD professionals.

Job Description – Responsibilities
Content Designers work within multidisciplinary squads across UKHSA to make services easier to understand and use. They:
Write clear, usable content for services and assure content quality.
Use research and data to guide content decisions.
Develop and contribute to content strategies, balancing user needs with business requirements.
Apply content design best practices and principles.
Collaborate with stakeholders to demonstrate the value of user-centred design.
Ensure content meets accessibility, NHS style, and government standards.
Share insights across the UCD community of practice.
Essential Criteria
Experience in user-centred content design methods, best practice, and tooling.
Proven ability to write and edit accessible content using style guides and standards.
Experience creating content strategies that align with user needs and business goals.
Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills.
Experience working in multidisciplinary teams, including with user researchers.
Understanding of inclusive, equitable, and sustainable public service design.
Ability to collaborate effectively across professions for timely delivery.
Desirable:
Experience with content management systems (CMS).
Knowledge of working in agile environments.
Selection Process

Working Arrangements
This is a hybrid role based in Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, or London. Staff are expected to spend at least 60% of contractual hours in the office (approximately 3 days per week, pro rata).
UKHSA offices are modern, with strong transport links and co-location alongside other government departments, including the Department of Health and Social Care.
