Job Summary

An opportunity has arisen for a Management Accountant to join the Financial Management team at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust. The postholder will take the lead with one of the Trust’s key Clinical Divisions and support the attainment of financial performance.

The role involves:

  • Providing financial support and advice on behalf of the Deputy Divisional Business Accountant to a Division with a budget of around £50–60 million.

  • Dealing with complex, emotive, and contentious issues.

  • Constraining managers where required to ensure financial targets are achieved.

  • Advising managers and Directors on effective use of finance and resources to increase efficiency and improve services.

  • Developing commercial awareness across clinical divisions and understanding linkages between financial and performance targets.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Work as a business partner to the Division, ensuring value for money and appropriate financial control.

  • Develop business cases.

  • Produce monthly management accounts and present these at regular meetings.

  • Hold challenging conversations to ensure efficiency targets are met.

  • Take responsibility for management, development, training, and performance of accountable staff.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Ensure Divisions are fully aware of financial control, probity, and stewardship.

  • Ensure compliance with standing financial instructions and standing orders.

  • Guarantee that financial records present a true and fair view.

  • Meet financial timescales and requirements for corporate reporting, statutory returns, accounts, policies, and legislation.

Person Specification

Qualifications (Essential)

  • Part-qualified CCAB Accountant (final year of study) with relevant financial management experience, or AAT.

  • Educated to A-level or equivalent.

Experience (Essential)

  • Previous management accounts role.

  • Previous NHS Finance department experience.

Desirable:

  • Substantial accountancy profession experience.

Skills & Knowledge (Essential)

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Business planning and budget setting experience.

  • Supervising and training junior staff.

  • Strong IT skills, including spreadsheets and databases.

  • Ability to prioritise workload and work independently.

  • Adaptable, flexible, and eager to learn.

Desirable:

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in compliance with the Data Protection Act.
