Main Duties and Responsibilities

Design and Deliver User-Centred Solutions

  • Create accessible, impactful, and intuitive digital experiences across multiple platforms.

  • Prioritise user needs while aligning with NHS service standards.

Champion UI/UX Best Practices

  • Promote and apply best practices to ensure consistency, usability, and accessibility in all digital products.

Collaborate in Agile Teams

  • Work in a supportive, agile environment contributing to sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives.

Prototype and Validate

  • Lead the creation of interactive prototypes during discovery phases to support requirement gathering and user testing.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate with stakeholders and the Lead Front-End Developer to address complex design challenges and achieve organisational goals.

Support Front-End Development

  • Translate design prototypes into responsive, accessible, and high-performing web interfaces.

Ensure Standards Compliance

  • Adhere to NHS Digital Service Standards and accessibility guidelines.

Mentor and Guide

  • Provide guidance to developers and junior designers in front-end technologies and design principles.

Contribute to Strategic Initiatives

  • Support delivery of design work that advances the Trust’s Digital Clinical Strategy and transformation programmes.

Job Description

The Senior UI/UX Designer will bring creativity, strategic thinking, and hands-on design expertise to craft meaningful digital experiences. The role requires practical experience within the software development lifecycle, especially in agile and cross-functional environments.

Key Requirements:

  • Ability to transform complex problems into elegant, user-focused solutions.

  • Strong collaboration skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Professional knowledge acquired through a degree or equivalent experience.

  • In-depth understanding of software development and digital design strategy.

  • Strong experience in UI/UX or digital product design roles.

  • Proven ability in designing for both web and mobile applications.

  • Expertise in responsive design, grid systems, and accessibility standards.

  • Skilled in industry-standard tools such as Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Balsamiq, Omnigraffle, InVision, or Sketch.

Desirable Experience

  • Knowledge of front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) for design handoff and developer collaboration.

  • Experience with prototyping, iterative design, and agile environments.

  • Exposure to healthcare or regulated industries.

  • Experience using analytics tools.

  • Mentoring or supporting junior designers.

This role requires a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check due to its inclusion under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
