Main Duties of the Job

The postholder will:

  • Manage the Financial Accounts transactional team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality transactional services across the Trust.

  • Collaborate with the Trust’s Shared Service Providers to oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, treasury, and VAT services.

  • Ensure regular reconciliation and review of financial accounts.

  • Report directly to the Head of Financial Accounting and Deputy Director of Finance, identifying opportunities for improvement within the Trust’s financial systems.

The Senior Financial Accountant will be a key member of this department, maintaining the consistency and reliability that enables front-line staff to deliver essential emergency services effectively.

Job Description and Responsibilities

  1. Ensure all control accounts are fully reconciled monthly and promptly resolve any issues.

  2. Review and update financial systems and procedures annually.

  3. Liaise with shared service providers for day-to-day financial management and assist with service development.

  4. Manage the weekly and annual cashflow forecasts.

  5. Support the Head of Financial Accounting in identifying cash requirements and preparing business cases for cash support.

  6. Review daily bank statements, reconcile bank accounts, and manage cash schedules.

  7. Liaise with external agencies and professional advisors, including HMT and VAT advisors.

  8. Prepare and present reports for the Audit Committee in line with internal governance requirements.

  9. Maintain written documentation for financial accounting policies and procedures.

  10. Ensure compliance with accounting standards and monitor adherence to Trust financial protocols.

  11. Maintain thorough audit trails and collaborate with internal and external auditors.

  12. Participate in relevant training and professional development activities.

  13. Develop staff skills and ensure progress against Personal Development Plans.

  14. Deputise for the Head of Financial Accounting when required.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Essential: CCAB qualified.

Experience

  • Essential: Significant managerial finance experience within the NHS and proven experience managing NHS finance teams.

  • Desirable: Specialist Financial Accounting experience in the NHS.

Knowledge

  • Essential: Expert understanding of NHS finance and IFRS reporting standards.

  • Desirable: Knowledge of cash management processes within the NHS.
