The successful candidate will lead the delivery of high-quality mental health care in Sheffield and play a key role in the Trust’s ongoing journey of improvement and transformation.

Main Duties of the Job

The post holder will:

  • Join a directorate leadership structure, working closely with the Clinical Director, Head of Nursing, and other Allied Health Professional leaders.

  • Hold responsibility for the performance and operation of the Acute and Community Directorate.

  • Collaborate with senior leaders to align priorities, promote innovation, and ensure efficient resource management.

  • Provide visionary and motivational leadership to colleagues and partners.

  • Address complex or contentious matters with resilience and positivity.

  • Oversee a diverse portfolio of inpatient and community services, each led by a General Manager.

  • Support the Senior Head of Service in working with local authorities and system stakeholders to ensure effective service delivery.

The Head of Service will:

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for multiple service lines.

  • Ensure delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality care.

  • Promote collaborative working across the directorate and wider system.

  • Support governance, performance management, and continuous service improvement.

Person Specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent.

  • Recognised management qualification or equivalent experience.

  • Evidence of continued professional development.

Desirable:

  • Professional qualification (e.g., RMN, CQSW, Psychology, OT).

Knowledge & Skills

Essential:

  • Strong understanding of NHS and Social Care policies related to mental health.

  • Knowledge of governance and regulatory requirements.

  • Ability to set clear targets, motivate staff, and delegate effectively.

  • Strong IT and information management skills.

  • Awareness of mental health commissioning arrangements and national priorities.

Experience

Essential:

  • Proven experience managing multiple mental health services.

  • Successful track record leading multi-professional teams.

  • Skilled in expressing complex issues clearly, both verbally and in writing.

  • Experience of managing change and financial resources.

  • Strategic visioning and workforce planning expertise.

Desirable:

  • Experience in innovative service provision.
