Job Summary
Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Senior Project Manager (Band 7) to join the Clinical Research Facility (CRF) — the first NHS trust in England and Wales to achieve MHRA Phase 1 accreditation.
The Senior Project Manager will oversee multiple clinical research projects across diverse clinical disciplines. The role involves line management of a project team, ensuring the effective setup, delivery, and closeout of assigned research projects.
This position offers an opportunity to work collaboratively with both commercial and academic partners, developing innovative research protocols, securing regulatory approvals, and driving successful project delivery within a dynamic and growing team.
Main Duties of the Job
The Senior Project Manager will:
Develop and deliver Early Phase CRF-led clinical trials under the direction of the Principal Investigator and CRF Operational Manager.
Contribute to protocol development, budgeting, scheduling, and quality management.
Serve as the primary contact for sponsors, ensuring deliverables are met while managing risks.
Provide line management, mentoring, and KPI oversight across the CRF portfolio.
Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, meeting deadlines independently.

Job Description and Responsibilities
The Senior Project Manager will:
Provide expert project management advice across the directorate and organisation.
Manage full project lifecycles from initiation to closure for multiple high-priority projects.
Ensure compliance with PRINCE2 project management standards and robust governance structures.
Track progress, budgets, and quality against project plans and business cases.
Identify, evaluate, and mitigate risks through structured contingency planning.
Prepare progress reports for stakeholders, using approved project management software.
Coordinate training, documentation, and post-implementation reviews.
Represent the directorate at meetings, workshops, and presentations.
Liaise with internal and external partners, including funders and research teams.
Support audits, KPI tracking, and continuous improvement across the portfolio.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
Master’s Degree or equivalent qualification.
Formal Project Management certification (PRINCE2 Practitioner or MSP Foundation) or equivalent experience in delivering projects.
Desirable:
ITIL Foundation qualification.
Experience
Essential:
Proven experience managing multiple complex or interrelated projects.
Experience leading project teams and collaborating with senior clinical professionals.
Skilled in Microsoft Office and project management tools.
Strong background in teaching, presenting, and change management.
Experience working within the NHS environment.
Desirable:
Knowledge of IT systems supporting patient care.
