Job Summary

The UKHSA Digital and Data Directorate provides strategic leadership and oversight for developing and managing a common and bespoke suite of performant, modern, secure, data and analytical tools, services, platforms and applications, ensuring access to high quality data and analytics services, internally and externally.

Based within the Digital and Data Directorate, the Data Product Development Division are responsible for the development and delivery of new and existing dashboards and platforms, ensuring that data are made available to improve health security outcomes.

UKHSA’s flagship product is the UKHSA data dashboard, which builds on the influential COVID-19 dashboard and presents data on COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses such as influenza.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Collation, analysis, interpretation and visualisation of public health information

  • Implement data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes

  • Build and maintain interactive dashboards and data visualisation tools

  • Participate in “business as usual” data product operations, including data pipelines and quality assurance

  • Liaise with colleagues on issues relating to data quality and impact on analysis

  • Communicate analytical/statistical matters to non-specialists

  • Ensure compliance with policies on security, confidentiality, and release of information

Job Description & Responsibilities

As a Data Analyst, responsibilities include:

  • Collecting, processing and integrating data to build pipelines, dashboards and visualisations

  • Designing and developing data models and schemas

  • Implementing ETL processes to ensure data quality, consistency and integrity

  • Collaborating with public health professionals to understand data needs

  • Acting as a bridge between technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Ensuring adherence to governance policies and security protocols

  • Conducting data profiling, source system analysis and data quality checks

  • Producing health indicators and ensuring data integrity for downstream analyses

  • Working matrix style with colleagues to deliver national health intelligence outputs

Essential Criteria

  • Experience coding with SQL, R or Python; familiarity with data science best practice

  • Experience working with health-related datasets

  • Experience using Microsoft Power BI

  • Knowledge of data security, management and governance

  • Ability to perform analyses supporting business decisions

  • Experience producing and evaluating data models

  • Ability to analyse complex issues from multiple sources

  • High degree of numeracy and literacy

  • Ability to present and visualise data accessibly

  • Strong communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences

  • Commitment to equality of opportunity

  • A first or second class honours degree in a numerate subject, or higher degree, or equivalent CPD

Technical Skill: Data Analyst

Location (Hybrid)

Hybrid working available at Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool or London HQs.
Minimum 60% of contractual hours must be office-based.

Salary Range

  • HEO National: £33,422 to £40,731

  • HEO Outer: £35,587 to £43,244

  • HEO Inner: £37,749 to £45,353

Salary placement depends on background and transfer rules.
